Explanation of Point Source and Nonpoint Source Pollution
Point Source Pollution
Point source pollution comes from the millions of gallons of wastewater discharged from the pipes of industrial facilities and municipal sewage treatment plants into rivers, streams, lakes, and the ocean.
As authorized by the Clean Water Act, the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit program controls water pollution by regulating point sources that discharge pollutants into waters of the United States. The Georgia EPD administers the NPDES permit program in Georgia.
Nonpoint Source Pollution
Nonpoint source pollution comes from many diffuse sources. NPS pollution is caused by rainfall or snowmelt moving over and through the ground. As the runoff moves, it picks up and carries away natural and human-made pollutants, finally depositing them into lakes, rivers, wetlands, coastal waters, and even our underground sources of drinking water. These pollutants include but are not limited to:
- Excess fertilizers, herbicides, and insecticides from agricultural lands and residential areas;
- Oil, grease, and toxic chemicals from urban runoff and energy production;
- Sediment from improperly managed construction sites, crop and forest lands, and eroding streambanks;
- Bacteria and nutrients from livestock, pet wastes, and faulty septic systems
Founded in 1966, the Lake Lanier Association is the oldest volunteer group working to protect the high water quality as well as the Lake Lanier water levels and to preserve its valuable legacy for future generations.
