Our History

In 1956 the U.S. Corps of Engineers completed Buford Dam on the Chattahoochee River. The Corps built the lake to manage navigation and flood control, to provide hydroelectric power, and to supply water for the city of Atlanta and surrounding areas.

The Lake Lanier Association was formed ten years later in 1966. It began as a group of lakeside property owners concerned about issues that impacted the health and safety of the lake. Environmental issues on Lake Lanier in 1966 were very different than they are today. Today the number of visitors and residents on and around the lake has grown exponentially. With that growth, comes more complex issues to the environment and health of our lake. Lake Lanier Association has adapted to the changing pressures and worked for 57 years to advocate through a balanced approach for Lake Lanier.
