A continued lack of rainfall could make Lake Lanier more hazardous, the Army Corps of Engineers warned in a press release this week.
Several things are reportedly contributing to Lanier’s normal seasonal water level reduction, said Clyde Morris, vice president and secretary of Lake Lanier Association.
The main cause is a lack of rain, but also the Corps “has drawn down West Point Lake to perform repairs on the dam gates, so that lake is not contributing to water storage,” he said.
“The severe cold snap earlier this week required the Corps to generate additional power from Buford Dam in addition to its regular flows for water quality and water supply.”
Also, headwater factors at Jim Woodruff Dam are hindering the Corps’ ability to reduce flows, Morris said.
“Once the convergence of all these factors passes, we hope discharges from Buford Dam will be reduced by the weekend and we will see a slower drawdown over the next week or so.”
